"FFFFFFFF","Introduction Help","WELCOME to form•Z, the 3D form synthesizer. The following paragraphs summarize the basic features of the system, but leave many details uncovered. More information about specific tools and commands can be obtained by selecting the respective item from the ""Help"" menu. For a complete presentation of the form•Z features you should consult your User's Manual.
You may be running the regular version of form•Z, or form•Z RenderZone, the version that offers photorealistic rendering, or form•Z RadioZity, the version that offers the most accurate simulation of lights. You may be running the program under the MacOS or Windows operating system. In all cases form•Z is one and the same program and its modeling capabilities will perform the same. There are only a few interface differences between the two operating systems and you will of course be able to do more advanced rendering, including raytracing, with RenderZone and RadioZity. Walkthrough animations can be produced with any version of form•Z, but can certainly take advantage of RenderZone’s and RadioZity’s advanced rendering capabilities.
form•Z is primarily a general purpose solid and surface modeler that offers you the tools to generate, manipulate, and sculpt objects in 3D space. form•Z also contains a drafting environment where images of models produced in the modeling environment can be composed, refined, and annotated. The drafting environment has its own independent set of tools that can be used to produce additional drawings locally. These include a variety of line drawing and editing tools, associative dimensioning, symbol creation and placement, hatching, and text. The drafting module even includes 2D Boolean operations, which are among the trademarks of form•Z, especially when applied to solids in modeling, where they are able to handle many more special cases than other applications.
The basic types of modeling objects are surfaces and solids. A surface object can be a simple open or closed line or a meshed surface. An object is solid when it is completely enclosed, which makes it well formed. Variations of these basic types are surface solids, which are two-sided surfaces that are completely enclosed but contain no volume; enclosures, which can be surface or solid objects, are double line (""wall"") objects that contain space. Parametric objects available in form•Z include analytic primitives, a variety of splines, controlled meshes, nurbz, and patches. All these are objects that internally carry the control parameters that generated them and thus their forms can be easily changed after their initial creation. Other advanced features in form•Z are rounding and blending, 2D and 3D text, 2D and 3D symbols that can be placed as instances, flexible sweep operations, skinning, metaformz, smoothed meshes, displacements, helices, screws, stairs, geodesic spheres, terrain modeling, unfolded objects, and many more.
You communicate with form•Z through the menu bar commands at the top of the screen, the tool bar on the left, floating palettes dedicated to particular operations, and the window tools found on the lower margin of each window. Pressing the mouse on an icon of the tool bar pops out more icons, any of which can be selected by dragging the mouse to it. Dragging the mouse beyond the last icon tears off the icons as an independent tool palette that can be positioned anywhere on your screen. You can also turn icons off and completely customize your tool palettes, by arranging your tools any way you wish.
The options that affect the operations of the tools may be displayed in the Tool Options palette, which is context sensitive and is continuously updated to display the options of the active tool. These options can also be set in dialogs invoked by double clicking on a tool.
The teal and magenta rows in the default tool bar contain modifiers that set the mode under which the action producing tools, shown in black and white, operate. The tools on the first row generate primitive shapes directly and do not depend on modifiers. The tools on the second row determine the type of object that will be created when generating a shape with one of the drawing tools. On the 4th row are the Topological Level modifiers: point, segment, outline, face, object, group, and hole/volume. form•Z has the ability to apply most of its operations to any of these levels.
All objects can be generated graphically or through numeric input. Input is relative to an active reference plane, which can be one of the Cartesian planes, or a plane you generate somewhere in 3D space. You can also draw directly on other objects, when you use one of the object snapping options. You may switch reference planes from the window tool palette or from the Reference Planes palette. Arbitrarily positioned planes may be defined using the Define Arbitrary Plane window tool. Numeric input is entered through the Prompts palette that also instructs you about the steps required for the execution of an operation.
form•Z is organized in projects. Each project has its own windows. There are two types of windows: modeling and drafting windows.
Whenever you attempt to execute an inappropriate operation, form•Z beeps and posts an error message. This message may be presented immediately or it may be placed into a list of messages from where you can read it by selecting the ""Error Messages"" item from the ""Help"" menu. Which option is used depends on the preference selection you have made.

"FFFFFFFE","Demo Introduction Help","WELCOME to form•Z RadioZity Demo, the 3D form synthesizer with advanced rendering capabilities. The following paragraphs summarize the basic features of the system, but leave many details uncovered. More information about specific tools and commands can be obtained by selecting the respective item from the ""Help"" menu. For more details of the form•Z features and how they work, consult the Mini Manual which accompanies this Demo.
You may be running form•Z RadioZity Demo under the MacOS or Windows operating system. On both form•Z is one and the same program and its modeling capabilities will perform the same. There are only a few interfacing differences. Walkthrough animations can also be produced with any version of form•Z, but can certainly take advantage of RenderZone’s and RadioZity’s advanced rendering capabilities.
form•Z RadioZity Demo is a working version of the application which is intended to let you experience its interface, modeling operations, and rendering. These features are disabled: the printing facilities, the Save commands, and the export facilities. Its import facilities are limited to importing form•Z models and certain image files. Specifically you can import PICT on the Macintosh, BMP on Windows, or Targa on both operating systems. You are actually encouraged to open some of the form•Z models shipped with the Demo and to import some of the image files included or your own and map them as textures or decals, or use them with any of the other features of the program that use bit mapped images. Note that, even though they are disabled for the Demo, form•Z imports and/or exports many formats, including DXF, EPS, FACT, IGES, Illustrator, OBJ, RIB, STL, TIFF, 3DGF, 3DMF and VRML; also Metafile on Windows and 3DS on Intel based Windows only; and QuickTime VR on MacOS only. form•Z RadioZity Demo is limited to 6 hour work sessions, therefore, when the time limit is reached, you will be prompted to quit and restart.
